Introduction

India is facing a dual challenge — rising energy demand and limited agricultural land. Traditional solar installations often occupy fertile land, forcing farmers to choose between electricity generation and farming.

But what if you could do both?

Introducing Agrivoltaics — a smart solution that allows you to generate solar power while continuing agricultural activities on the same land.

What is Agrivoltaics?

Agrivoltaics (also known as Agrovoltaic systems) is an innovative approach where solar panels are installed at an elevated height, allowing crops to grow underneath.

In simple terms:

• Solar panels generate electricity
• Crops grow below them

This creates a dual-use land model, maximizing both energy and agricultural output.

How Does an Agrivoltaic System Work?

• Solar panels are mounted on elevated structures
• Panel spacing is optimized for sunlight penetration
• Crops are cultivated below using efficient irrigation systems

This ensures that both solar generation and farming thrive together.

Key Benefits of Agrivoltaics

1. Double Income Model

With agrivoltaics, you earn from:

• Solar power generation (stable income)
• Crop cultivation (seasonal income)

Result: Two revenue streams from the same land

2. Up to 150% Land Productivity

Studies show that agrivoltaic systems can increase overall land productivity by up to 150%.

3. Improved Crop Yield

• Crop yields can increase by 20–30%
• Partial shading protects crops from extreme heat

4. Water Savings (30%+)

• Reduced evaporation under solar panels
• Better soil moisture retention

Leads to over 30% water savings

5. Climate-Resilient Farming

Agrivoltaics helps farmers adapt to:

• Rising temperatures
• Unpredictable weather

Ensuring more stable and sustainable income

The Future of Agrivoltaics in India

India is rapidly expanding its renewable energy capacity while supporting farmers through initiatives like PM-KUSUM.

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India aims to significantly increase decentralized solar capacity through farmer participation.

Agrivoltaics perfectly aligns with this vision by combining:
Clean energy generation
Agricultural productivity
